This morning I arrived at work to find a holiday card from one of my peers/friends on my desk. My work friend had placed a candy cane on top of the card – and when I saw the red-and-white striped sweet, I immediately smiled.
I haven’t had a candy cane in at least 10 years (maybe more); when I saw the treat, my mind instantly, involuntarily filled with a montage of childhood memories: elementary school holiday parties, my sister and I pillaging stockings on Christmas morning (with my parents looking on fondly), melted candy on presents during December vacations in Florida… within five seconds of arriving to work this morning, I was grinning from ear to ear.
An incredibly joyful way to start the day. Tasty, too. :)

Funny about candy canes —
they even create their own instant memories! Love ‘em —
Smell and taste are two *powerful* memory creators. I can be INSTANTLY transported to a memory at the slightest scent or bite…
Sweet! You work with some nice folks, Stef.
I really do, Ruth. I am incredibly lucky to be *surrounded* in my life by such wonderful, thoughtful people!
It’s amazing what can trigger or memories. Years ago they used to sell rock in the UK at seaside resorts with the name of the resort printed through it. Relatives always brought home sticks of rock for the children when they went on holiday.
“Rock”? As in, rock candy? Or something else?
Love candy canes!
They are such a fun winter/holiday treat. :)
My first taste of candy cane mintiness came by way of some brownies a co-worker made. She frosted them with a white, mint frosting that had chunks of crushed candy can sprinkled over the top. I’ve never tasted anything like them! Yummy!!
You never had a candy cane before then?! Or do you mean, your first taste of candy cane for this season?
We put a candy cane on Zephy’s stocking at Christmas which invariably get left uneaten. I’ll send it over. ;)
Hey, if Zephy doesn’t want his candy cane, I’ll happily take it! ;)
