Today was the first day of my meditation retreat; and it got off to a pretty rough start. Day 1 was a rocky one; yet amid the internal turmoil and the external noise, I did have one cool smile experience:
It’s 9:35 am. The retreat has just started (35 minutes late). The primary teaching monk has entered the meditation hall, and taken his seat on the podium before all of us. He confirms with the facilitator that our first meditation session will be an hour long. Not seeing a clock near by, he reaches into his simple maroon fabric bag, and pulls out – an iPhone.
I audibly chuckled. Seeing the 83-year-old tiny robed monk successfully navigate the device was a terrific picture in contrast; and it was so unexpected… it was wonderful.
