We might as well have kids…

Oh. My. Lord.

Seriously?

Yes, seriously.

One of our two dogs is wearing a puppy diaper.

It’s absolutely ridiculous, I know.

Mama, don't look at me.

This morning my sweetie and I caught Mr. Jojo gumming an area of his rear end next to his tail – and despite no longer having teeth, he had managed to rub his skin raw and bloody… So rather than have him 1) make the area worse, 2) have it get infected, and 3) have him bleed all over the house, I went to the pet store and purchased… puppy diapers.  (As well as some doggy antibiotic ointment to try and help expedite the healing process.)

Amazing what we will do for the beings we love…

I'm going to your room to pout.

Aw, thank you Joss. I tell ya, these two guys have been much more of a handful/challenge for me than our previous dog was (though she had her own set of issues)… but they are such lovies, I try to do what I can for them (and bite my tongue/breathe deeply when issues like these arise)…

  2. Poor little guy. I hope it feels better soon. And you remind me I’m so glad to have my kids out of diapers!

I like your tactics in dealing with the problem – but do you know why he is ‘gumming’ his rear end? I’m concerned because our dog started like this, and the problem turned out to be a blocked anal gland. They keep licking their rear end or scooting it along the floor to fix their discomfort.
Please have him checked out, just to be on the safe side. Our dog ended up with an abscess which burst – and a big vet bill!

We don’t know why he’s gumming his rear… he was just at the vet last week (for a mouth and ear check-up), so I hope she would have found any serious underlying issues as part of her exam? But now you have me worried…

He’s not scooting (which is a tell-tale sign of anal gland issues), but still…

      *sigh*

I’m sorry I worried you, but it’s something to keep in mind. Just keep an eye on him – you will know if there is anything serious going on. Wish they could tell us what’s wrong . . .

I know your intent wasn’t to cause worry, and I really do appreciate you giving me a head’s up of things to be aware/mindful of. It’s just easy for me to worry some times… but I will try and keep my concerns in check, and grounded in healthy reality. That’s where my sweetie is a huge asset! 🙂

4/6 Update: After several days of the issue not seeming to get bettter, I took Jojo to the vet yesterday – and she confirmed it was a blocked and infected anal glad. So, he’s now getting treatment: tea bag compress on his rear twice a day for two days; antibiotics twice a day for two weeks; and a tablespoon of pumpkin twice a day for the rest of his life.

We started the various treatments yesterday afternoon, and in just 24 hours he’s already seeming to feel a LOT better.

Just thought you (and perhaps others) might want to know. Thank you again for your concern, and your cautions/awareness-sharing – I appreciate it!

  4. LOL! 😀 Awww, its actually pretty cute.

We don’t have kids, but I always joke we don’t need them because we have dogs. One of my dogs can’t function without his “blanky” and the only one who can fix it right is mommy. Its annoying, but I love it at the same time. Soooo cute! 🙂

Jojo is doing better. The antibiotics kicked in (see the 4/6 update a few comments up for more details), and he’s leaving his rear alone (for the most part). The pumpkin is also doing its job, which is good, too. 🙂
